Bahrain in the Safavid period (1932―1935)

Bahrain in the Safavid period

The writer of the Mafatih-ul-Adab says that Bahrein was retaken from the Portuguese in 1039 Hijra.
The writer of “Muntazem-i-Nasseri” states on page 183, paragraph 2, citing the events of the year 1043, that the Governor of Bahrein, Sundak Sultan, came to the Court of Shah Safi and offered the latter a sword, found in those regions, which formerly belonged to Tamerlane the Gurkan. The writer of “Mafatih-ul-Adab” adds to this story that the sword was a part of other items of the offer and that the Governor was as a result reinstated in his post.
The writer of the book “Buheireh”, Fuznni Astrabadi, states on page 586 that “Farangan” the King of the Portuguese occupied the port of Hormuz in the year 913 Hijra; the ruler of the port of Jerun, which is another name for Hormuz, whose name was Sulghur Shah ben Turan Shah became a vassal to the Portuguese King and the infidels used to enjoy the upper hand over the Mussulmans until in the year 1010 Hijra when Shah Abbas sent Allah Verdi Khan the Governor of Fars accompanied by his men and the fighting men of all of the Southern Ports to expel the Portuguese, which they did. He adds “in this year 1047 when I am writing this book “Buheireh” those regions are still in occupation of the Kizilbash troops (troops of Shah Abbas) and nothing is known of the future developments”.
The writer of “Mafatih-ul-Adab” states that the people of Bahrein were at their wits’ end in 1077 because of the extortions of Baha Khan Sultan and complained against him to the Safavi Court and Baba Khan was dismissed and replaced by Sultan son of Khazal Khan who was then at Seistan in Government employ. He further adds that in 1113 Mehdi Quli Khan was dismissed from the Governorship of those regions and Ghazaq Sultan was appointed to replace him.
The writer of the “Persian Gulf” states that during the reign of Shah Sultan Hussein (1105-1135), the King of Oman, Sultan ben Seif, taking advantage of the slackness of the Persian ruler, occupied Bahrein and in 1133 (1720 A.D.) the Arabs of Mascat occupied some of the Persian islands in the Gulf.
But the Persian troops occupied Oman during the reign of Nadir Shah and Bahrein was also under Persian hands till the year 1198 (1783 A.D.) when the Arabs of Athoobi (عثوبی) took it from the Persians.
