Qizilbashes in the Chenab Colony, Punjab (Punjab Government, 1905)

Qizilbashes in the Chenab Colony, Punjab

Most of the minor tribes whose name gives no direct clue to their occupation are engaged in agriculture. There are some Awan, Dogra, Mallah, Ghakkar, and Khokhar grantees, while the Qizil-bashes hold two villages, and pensioners have got land as Sheikhs, Mughals, Kashmiris, Lobanas, etc., etc. Of the purely tenant classes perhaps the Mahtams (6,487) are the most important. Many of them are Sikhs and followers of Bedi Sir Baba Khem Singh. They come from the Montgomery District and cultivate principally in Biloch Mauzas.
